Sailing
Hundreds of thousands of men and women all over the planet practice sailing as a way of life. It has a multitude
of passionate proponents in the world, and is one of the handful of sporting activities of the present day where
age is not necessarily a factor. In reality, the older the sailor is, the more improved are his sailing
capabilities!
Sailing has invariably been associated with the history and activities of numerous
countries since ancient times. It has enjoyed a very important development in a country’s progress and expansion
with its’ mastering of the oceans by way of navigation.
The earliest sailing competition, the Cumberland Cup, was inaugurated in 1715, and is still held right up until
today! The first international sailing competition was the ‘Hundred Guineas Cup”, which was held in 1851. In the
present day, the identical cup is called the Americas Cup, which was given its name, after the first winning boat “America”. Sailing was
introduced in the Olympic Games in 1900, in Paris. The International Sailing Federation was founded in the year
1906 and now has over 121 member-states with more than half a million sailors!
International sailing events take place on waterways or tracks that are marked by marker buoys. With these
waterways, the course of the sailing track is defined. The excitement in sailing lies in the simple fact that the
competitors confront not only their competitors, but additionally the unpredictability of mother nature. In sailing
competitive events and climatic conditions can play a very decisive aspect in the race. Each shift in wind strength
or direction leads to the repositioning of the buoys. It is the job of the committees at sea to keep an eye on the
weather conditions and to lay the buoys accordingly.
There are countless sailing races like single handed dinghy sailing, double handed dinghy sailing, windsurfing
and keelboat sailing. Essentially, there is no single ‘yacht type’ of boat. Rather there are many kinds that
include sloops, catamarans, yawls and ketches. Boat racing in most cases falls into three broad groups;
one-design classes where similar boats compete, handicap class where dissimilar boats race and the rating
classes where a variety of formulas take into consideration the boat length, type of rig, sail size and other
factors.
In sailing competitions, the sailor’s scores correspond to his or her final position. This signifies that the
first place sailor scores 1 point, the second 2,and so on. So the winner is the participant with the lowest
aggregate of all the scores in all the races, as soon as the worst scores have been removed.
In the beginning, sailboats were constructed of wooden hulls with sails of sailcloth, called duck. However, in
recent times, fiberglass hulls and synthetic fabrics have predominated the sailing scene with rigid wing sails
being chosen in place of fabric sails to achieve higher speeds. In recent years, ocean racing, which is an
demanding and dangerous sports activity has acquired increased significance. It is more a long-distance solo
event.
Currently, ocean racers sail sophisticated multihulled yachts with the aid of modern technological know-how like
sophisticated communication equipment and satellite generated weather reports. Now with greater techniques of boat
building, sailing has become a sport not only for the rich, but also for participation by almost everyone.
Most people typically learn to sail by going sailing with family or associates. However, if you don’t know
anyone who is the owner of a boat, then you could embark on formal training to get a recognized qualification. The
reason a recognized qualification is necessary is because lots of yacht charter companies request one when you
charter yachts. National associations or federations in many countries will offer you a series of courses through
which one can get an internationally recognized qualification.
